Police in Calgary are investigating a serious collision involving a pedestrian and a CTrain in the downtown core Thursday evening that left a 60-year-old man with life-threatening injuries.
According to investigators, the incident occurred at approximately 5:20 p.m. near Centre Street and Seventh Avenue S.W. Emergency crews were dispatched after reports that a pedestrian had been struck by an oncoming LRT train in the busy downtown transit corridor.
Police said the man had been walking southbound on Centre Street when he entered the path of the approaching train as it moved through the intersection on a green signal. The collision resulted in the pedestrian becoming trapped beneath the train, prompting an urgent rescue response from emergency personnel.
Firefighters and paramedics worked to extricate the man from underneath the CTrain before transporting him to a nearby hospital in critical, life-threatening condition. The severity of his injuries has not been further updated at this time.
Authorities confirmed that neither speed nor impairment are currently believed to have contributed to the incident. Investigators continue working to determine the full circumstances leading up to the collision, including reviewing traffic signals, transit operations, and witness statements from the scene.
The crash caused temporary disruptions along the downtown transit line as police secured the area and emergency crews conducted rescue operations. Portions of the intersection experienced delays while investigators documented evidence and transit officials coordinated service adjustments.
The incident has renewed public attention on pedestrian safety around Calgary’s downtown CTrain corridors, particularly in high-traffic intersections where trains, vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians frequently converge during rush hour periods.
Officials are encouraging anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who may possess relevant video footage to contact investigators as the inquiry remains active.
