Gordon Fields Marietta, Georgia Car Accident: Father Killed After Car Slammed Into Stopped Tractor-Trailer on I-75 Bridge

A tragic overnight crash on Interstate 75 South in Marietta has claimed the life of 47-year-old Gordon Fields, leaving the Cobb County community mourning as investigators continue working to determine what caused the deadly collision.

According to authorities, the fatal crash occurred shortly before 1 a.m. Friday near North Marietta Parkway after traffic had already been heavily congested for hours due to an earlier accident that temporarily shut down all southbound lanes of I-75. Emergency crews had been clearing the previous crash scene while vehicles remained backed up across the interstate bridge.

Investigators said 29-year-old Mayki Marcelin of Davenport, Florida, was operating one of the tractor-trailers involved. Police reported that Marcelin’s truck remained stopped in a southbound travel lane even after surrounding traffic began moving again once the roadway reopened.

A second tractor-trailer, driven by 35-year-old Daniel Granados of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was traveling southbound in the same lane when he reportedly encountered the stopped truck unexpectedly. Authorities said Granados attempted to avoid a direct impact by swerving at the last moment, causing his truck to sideswipe the left portion of Marcelin’s trailer.

Moments later, Gordon Fields approached the area driving a white Volkswagen. According to investigators, his vehicle crashed into the rear of the stopped tractor-trailer with devastating force before he could avoid the obstruction in the roadway.

Emergency responders rushed to assist at the scene, but Fields was pronounced dead on the interstate due to the severity of his injuries. Officials said no other serious injuries were immediately reported. Both truck drivers remained at the scene and are cooperating fully with investigators as the inquiry continues.

The crash caused another significant traffic disruption along one of metro Atlanta’s busiest transportation corridors. Interstate 75 through Marietta routinely experiences dense overnight freight movement and commuter traffic, and accidents in the area near North Marietta Parkway often result in extensive delays and dangerous congestion.

Authorities are continuing to examine all factors connected to the crash, including traffic conditions, visibility, vehicle positioning, driver reaction times, and roadway circumstances. Investigators have not yet determined whether speed, distraction, fatigue, or other contributing factors played a role in the fatal collision.

No charges have been announced as of this time, and officials say the investigation remains active. Meanwhile, family members, friends, and community residents are mourning the sudden loss of Gordon Fields as they await further answers regarding the tragic overnight crash.
